There are stringent low carb diets out there, as well as ones that just suggest adding variety in your meals instead of heading to starch and other carbohydrate rich foods.

Types of Low Carb Diets

Some low carb diets are very strict, that can take the joy out of eating. Other low carb diets adhere to more of a lifestyle change that allows the dieter to pick and choose what they are eating with the main focusing being eating carbs in moderation. Depending on a person’s current weight, age, existing health conditions and more a low carb diet may not be the right one for them so it is important to do thorough research. Exercise is encouraged not to lose weight or fat, but rather to help give you a greater amount of energy. Strict low carb diets can make people crash and feel very fatigued, because carbs are necessary in moderation. The important aspects that most low carb diets follow include having protein at every meal- approximately one half gram for every pound of your ideal weight, which is typically somewhere between 60-85 grams. Carbs should be under 30 grams daily. Whole foods to eat during meals including raw and organic are preferable. Avoid white potatoes, rice, bread, sugar, flour and popcorn because they are high in starch and low in nutrients. Eat breakfast every day and throw in some fruit. Eating dinner earlier and in a fair sized portion will prevent dieters from over indulging later in the evening. It is also important to eat frequently including snacks which can consist of fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats like nuts.

Health Factors of Low Carb Diets

Overall many health experts and doctors agree that low carb diets are generally healthy and can promote weight-loss. Weight loss from a low carb diet is generally based on a lower caloric intake and increased exercise. It is still important to ensure that your body is getting all of the nutritional requirements it need, so some people may need to take vitamins and supplements to ensure they are meeting their daily requirements. Unfortunately it is difficult to determine if low carb diets are able to maintain weight-loss in the long term, because many individuals do not stick to the diet. It is also noted that vegetables and fruits can be high in carbs and low in protein, but this does not mean that they should be avoided. Instead it is important to still integrate these foods into one’s diet so that they receive the vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and phytochemicals required.

Costs Associated with Low Carb Diets

Low carb diets are not very expensive if you are just using certain aspects of the diet. If a person is following a strict low carb diet supplements and vitamins may be required making it more expensive. Many people eat from home more, avoiding restaurants and take out while on such a diet so in that aspect it can be less expensive than “normal” eating habits.
